This month we asked our head barman Andy to take us through one of the most popular drinks at The Church. This is what he gave us:
“An old fashioned is simple drink to make but you have to put love into it if you want to make it right, you have to give it your time and treat it nice. Use a good bourbon because that’s the star of this drink. I’m using Fighting Cock bourbon, it’s a Kentucky 6 year aged bourbon, it’s 51.5% ABV so it packs a punch but it’s got a sweet side to it, there’s hints of vanilla and caramel coming through with it’s fire.
– 50ml Fighting Cocks Bourbon
– 1tsp Brown Sugar
– dash of Angostura Bitters
– Orange Peel
– 1 maraschino cherry to garnish
Put the sugar and ice in a mixing glass and then add the bourbon and your dash of bitters.
This is where the love comes in. You need to stir this badboy for a while, you have to make sure the sugar is fully dissolved by the bourbon, if this takes you five minutes of constant stirring then that’s what you’ve got to do. It’s worth it.
When the sugar is fully dissolved pour the drink into a rocks glass with ice and give the orange peel a twist to get some of those citrus oils in the drink, garnish with the twisted peel and maraschino cherry.
There you go. An old fashioned Don Draper would be proud of.”
